I was looking for accommodations because the hostel I stayed at prior was full. As I was sitting at the internet cafe, I was slipping into exhaustion still felt a bit jet lagged, so I decided to go to the one right across the street. Turns out to be very cheap, a little basic, but I met some really interesting people. A few of them are your typical backpackers, but mostly people who are staying longterm and are basically working throughout the week at various jobs. That night I walked the length of Kent st. to find Lord Nelson’s Brewery. It was worth the walk because I found a great beer at the end of it. Old Admiral is a red ale with streaks of black, or a brown ale to be simpler put. They also had three sheets pale ale and old blood, which is a stout. There were a few others on tap that I must go back to try and the food looks good to. It is the oldest brewery in Sydney and still to this day brews their beer on site, mostly. On Wednesday I went to the Australian Museum where they had an Egyptian Pharaoh exhibit which is only here for a few weeks. They had a lot of mummy’s both in and out of their caskets, as well as artifacts …

Yes, I know, I haven’t posted the Sydney entry on the blog yet, how could that be?! Well, first you have to know that it is not that easy to find free wifi in Sydney (how we miss you dearly, South America)! Actually it is hard to find anything free or cheap in Sydney… So anyway, I’ll post the pictures of Sydney in this entry and will make another one for New Caledonia. After 14 and a half hours spent on the plane (5 movies one after the other and 0 minute of sleep) we landed in Sydney. We decided not to sleep on the plane so we would try to beat the jetlag. It has more or less worked. I got searched at customs, Simon didn’t, there is no justice in this world. So first surprise: Sydney is NOT South America… Yes, everything is expensive there. Even youth hostels. Hey, we’re back to civilization! Second surprise: we are old. Yes, all the other backpackers staying in those backpacker factories that are youth hostels in Oz are much younger than us… It’s party time all the time and we can’t really afford it. So I cheated a little and got a direct flight from Bangkok to Siem Reap, rather than battling it out with other hardcore travellers on the famously bumpy road to the border! The flight was a mere 40 minutes but then I spent almost 2 hours in passport control getting visas sorted!! Once through, i lugged my backpack on and made my way to grab a taxi, knowing that in Cambodia the custom is to dress conservatively I was wearing long trousers, however they are ones that rap around (good to keep cool) but when putting on my backpack i managed to pull them up with it, so therefore flashed my bum to immigration! Not the best way to enter a county!! After an interesting start the next couple of days ran surprisingly smoothly. On my first morning it was off to the land mine museum that i have heard great things about, so after a bowl of hearty noodle soup for breaky (im addicted to that stuff) I jumped on the back of a moto down the dirktrack which led to this steal shack in the middle of no-where! The museum is run independently by a guy who was a child solider during the rule of the Khmer rouge and now uses the skills …

I am going to try and use the story function on the pictures to describe most of this entry. I hope it helps illustrate this historic site. If you don’t know the history of Australia, it is basically an island of British convicts (soldiers as well). However, they weren’t murderers or rapist who got sent over to Australia. Most of the convicts were doing 50 years for some form of theft. But now they were free in Australia. There needed to be laws. What happens when you break one? You go to jail. What happens if you do it again? They send your ass to Port Arthur. Port Arthur is set in a peninsula on the southeast end of Tasmania. The only way to enter Port Arthur is through a small piece of land called Eaglehawk Neck. This made it ideal for a prison. Eaglehawk Neck had two guard towers, but more importantly, the entire straight was about as wide as a two laned road and was lined with half starving guard dogs. Pretty effective. When the convicts arrived to Port Arthur, all they saw was a barren piece of ground. To the left was the ocean, and all around them were hills. So basically, they were in a bowl. The ideal place for a prison. Except there was no prison …

I’m not sure what else there is to say…ha. Honestly, New South Wales is having wind and rain storms that have broken records back to 1964. There is a huge 740′ tanker shipwrecked on Nobbys Beach up in Newcastle. This is not what I was prepared for! I’ve been spending a lot of time just reading books in coffee shops and hanging out on the rainy days. My good friend Mr. Sean J Godfrey from back home is coming out in 3 days so I’ve been putting off the touristy things until he gets here…and until I can feel the warmth of the sun once again. I quit working almost a month ago too. My plans have entirely changed for the better! I’m not staying in Sydney as I originally planned. After Sean gets here, we’ll stay in Sydney for 3 weeks, then we’re going to move on and start backpacking around Australia for the next 6 weeks! I’ve been here for two months now and have really seen enough of the city. There is so much more to do here! So, the tentative plan is to fly to New Zealand on July 10 and spend 1-2 weeks there hanging out with the Kiwis. you can find great cheap holiday packages for nepal with nice accommodation, not many beaches though, however lots of 5 star hotels for people whom also want to travel in luxury. I noticed internet cafes order 5 AUD/hour for very lousy internet service, and hotels offer 5-10 AUD/hour for wireless access, is there a way to get wireless access for more reasonable prices? what about ADSL prices? how much does it cost to get one and how much per month do they charge?
